Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. They’re considered one of America’s favorite breeds. In the country alone, there are around 500,000 to 1,000,000 Golden Retrievers. But did you know that they don’t always have that golden coat?
Although a Golden Retriever is a breed on its own, it can still be divided into different categories. One example of this is the English Cream Golden Retriever, also known as an English Golden; the White Golden; the European Golden; and the Platinum Retriever. As you can tell from the names, the subcategories are based on the coat color of the Retriever. English Golden Retrievers have a white, cream-like color that separates them from the traditional Golden Retrievers you’re probably most familiar with.
The Golden Retriever breeds are descendants of the Wavy-Coated Golden Retriever and the Tweed Water Spaniel. They originated in Scotland and were bred primarily as gundogs. In the time from 1840 to 1890, these breeds were crossbred to birth a new type of retriever that can withstand the country’s rainy climates and rugged terrains.
Through a series of crossbreeding and natural evolution, the Golden Retriever expanded to other breeds. By 1911, the British Kennel Club first recognized the English Cream Golden Retriever. By 1925, this breed was introduced in the United States and was registered by the U.S. counterpart, the American Kennel Club.
Now, you might be wondering: what’s the difference between a typical Golden Retriever and an English Cream Golden Retriever?
While a Golden Retriever has a golden coat that ranges from light to dark, an English Cream Golden Retriever has a cream-colored coat that can range from white to slightly tan. However, due to their ancestry, even the whitest of English Cream Golden Retrievers may have some streaks of gold in their coat.
In terms of temperament, the English Cream Golden Retriever tends to be calmer and more relaxed as opposed to the more energetic and athletic Golden Retriever. Because of this, many families nowadays prefer the calmer White Golden Retrievers, especially if they have children running around the house.
In addition to their unique appearance, White Golden Retrievers are known for their friendly and affectionate nature. They are known to be great with children and other pets, making them a great choice for families. They are also highly trainable and eager to please, which makes them a great choice for people who want a loyal companion.
Another reason why people choose White Golden Retrievers is their versatility. White Golden Retrievers excel in a variety of roles, such as therapy dogs, service dogs, and as family pets. They are also great at sports like obedience, agility, and rally.
Throughout the years, the White Golden Retriever has proven to be an exceptional companion, therapy dog, and service dog. Their gentle, friendly, and affectionate nature makes them the perfect addition to any family!
