Traveling with your Golden retriever.
Lots of people travel with their Golden Retrievers whether puppies or adults. The truth of the matter is, they are family. Let’s see if we can answer some questions that many of us have as we plan to travel. How will we be traveling and where will we stay? Will they allow my dog to travel with me?
AIRPLANES – most airlines allow small dogs to fly in the cabin, 20#s or less. They have to be at least 8 weeks old and or fit in a soft crate under their seat. Some do allow you to check them as luggage and travel with them in climate-controlled area in cargo. Weather and outside temperatures will determine dates and times.
CABS- some cab companies are pet friendly. I would recommend calling ahead of time to be sure they offer that service.
TRAINS- Amtract allows small dogs to travel on their trains as long as they are 20#s and in carriers. Fees range from $30 to $40.00.
BUS- Greyhound does not allow pets on their buses with the only exception is a Certified Service Dog for a physically disabled person.
CRUISE SHIPS- There is only one cruise ship that allows dogs, the Cunard’s Queen Mary 2. Fees are $800 for dogs under 25#s and $1000 for larger dogs. Royal Caribbean and Carnival allow Certified Service Dogs only.
RENTAL CARS- Most car rental companies allow pets in their vehicles. They do charge an extra fee if damages or extra cleaning is required.
RV RENTALS- Some RV rentals like Cruise America, Happy Campers, RV Rental, Apollo RV, RV Share and Campervan North America cater to the family pet by allowing them to travel with their families. They do charge an extra cleaning fee between $250 and $300.
MOTEL STAYS- Many hotels allow dogs including The Econo Lodge, The L Motel and 8 Rock Springs. Be sure to call ahead to be sure your fur baby can stay as well.
Airbnb- Many quality Airbnb’s like 88 North Properties in Traverse City Michigan welcome dogs as family. 88 North Properties, LLC This Airbnb is pet friendly and welcoming to you family dog. These Northern Michigan communities are very welcoming and accommodating to the family dog. Most do not allow cats. Be sure to call ahead when you are not certain to be sure your fur baby is welcome.
CAMPGROUNDS- Not all campgrounds welcome dogs. The ones that do charge an additional fee. Be sure to call ahead.
