Are Rawhide Chews Dangerous for Golden Retrievers?

November 15th, 2023 Health

Rawhide Chews Dangerous

At Elite White Goldens, the well-being of our golden retriever puppies in Michigan is our top priority. As one of the leading golden retriever breeders in Michigan, we often receive questions about the best toys and treats for these beloved dogs. One common inquiry is about rawhide chews.

Are they safe for golden retrievers?

The Truth About Rawhide Chews

Rawhide chews might seem like a festive treat, especially during the holiday season, but they’re far from it. Contrary to popular belief, rawhide chews are not Christmas gifts; they are unplanned ER vet visits just waiting to happen! They might be popular in stores because people keep buying them, but the truth is, they are harmful to dogs.

1. Harmful Processing

Manufacturers process rawhides with irritating chemicals that dogs can ingest harmfully. These chemicals can cause digestive irritation, leading to problems like diarrhea and vomiting. Some dogs might even be allergic to rawhide or the substances used in their manufacture, exacerbating the issue.

2. Contamination Risks

Rawhide chews can contain trace amounts of toxic chemicals. There’s also the risk of Salmonella or E. coli contamination, which can be harmful not just to pets but also to humans who come into contact with these bacteria on the treats.

3. Choking and Blockages

The most significant risk associated with rawhide chews is choking or blockages. If a dog swallows large rawhide pieces, they can become lodged in the digestive tract and cause potential blockages. Vets can easily remove some blockages, while others may necessitate abdominal surgery. A blockage, if not addressed, can even lead to death.

4. The Hidden Costs

Think about the financial implications. Canine intestinal blockage or foreign body surgery can cost around $2,000 – $3,000. Moreover, diagnosing a blockage can be tricky since rawhide is skin, and X-rays don’t show skin very well. Vets might need to conduct a barium study, costing around $500 – $900.

The best-case scenario? Your dog painfully expels the pieces, which can injure the tissues on its way out.

Alternatives to Rawhide Chews

Given the potential risks associated with rawhide, many golden retriever owners look for safer alternatives. Here are some options:

  • Bully Sticks: Made from beef muscle, they are fully digestible and come in various sizes.
  • Rubber Chew Toys: These durable toys can hold treats to engage your golden retriever.
  • Dental Chews: Specifically designed to promote dental health, they can help reduce tartar and plaque buildup.

While rawhide chews might be a popular choice for many dog owners, it’s essential to be aware of the potential risks they pose, especially for breeds like golden retrievers. At Elite White Goldens, we always prioritize the health and safety of our golden retriever puppies. We recommend consulting with your veterinarian before introducing any new treats or toys to your pet’s routine. Remember, a well-informed decision can ensure a happy and healthy life for your furry companion.
